Dr. Otley, a Gastroenterologist at Halifax’s IWK Health Centre, was joined on ATV’s Breakfast television by 16-year-old Crohn’s patient, Shelby Beals, and her mother Kim who are strong supporters of the GEM project. Shelby was diagnosed with the disease six years ago, and despite two difficult years with tube feeding, she and her family have done everything possible not to let the disease hold the dynamic teenager back. Shelby plays on her local rugby team, is involved in wrestling and cadets as well as helping promote Crohn’s research. Her sister is now participating in the study.
